چکیده
BUMC PROCEEDINGS 2002;15:260–261 Talcosis or talc pneumoconiosis is an uncommon form of pulmonary dust disease first recognized over 100 years ago. Talcosis may follow inhalation of relatively low concentrations of talc dust over a long period or exposure to very high concentrations of the dust over a short time (1, 2). In an infant, death occurred within 20 hours of accidental inhalation of talcum powder containing approximately 93% talc (3). Baby powder, consisting mainly of talc powder, is insoluble and, if inhaled in large amounts, dries the tracheobronchial mucous membrane and prevents normal ciliary function. The small air passages then fill with retained mucus. Talc, or hydrated magnesium silicate, is formed during the breakdown and weathering of serpentine, tremolite, and anthrophyllite rock (1). The fibrogenic properties of talc are attributed to these impurities, especially anthrophyllite and tremolite, which are members of the asbestos group of minerals. Cosmetic Talc–Related Pulmonary Granulomatosis
Inhalation of cosmetic talc can lead to pulmonary foreign-body granulomatosis, though fewer than 10 cases of inhaled cosmetic talc-related pulmonary granulomatosis have been reported in adults. We report the case of a 64-year-old man with diffuse, bilateral pulmonary nodules and ground glass opacities associated with chronic inhalation of cosmetic talc. Transbronchial biopsy showed peribronchio...

متن کاملPulmonary talc granulomatosis mimicking malignant disease 30 years after last exposure: a case report
INTRODUCTION Pulmonary talc granulomatosis is a rare disorder characterized by the development of foreign body granuloma secondary to talc exposure. Previous case reports have documented the illness in current intravenous drug users who inject medications intended for oral use. We present a rare case of the disease in a patient with a distant history of heroin abuse who presented initially with...
متن کاملPulmonary Talcosis in an Immunocompromised Patient
The first case of pulmonary talcosis or talc pneumoconiosis related to inhalation of talc during its extraction and processing in mines was described by Thorel in 1896. Pulmonary talcosis is most commonly seen secondary to occupational exposure or intravenous (IV) drug abuse and, occasionally, in excessive use of cosmetic talc. Based on literature review, there has been an increase in reported ...
متن کاملInterstitial pulmonary fibrosis and progressive massive fibrosis related to smoking methamphetamine with talc as filler.
We present a case of interstitial pulmonary fibrosis accompanied by radiographic evidence of progressive massive fibrosis in a patient who had a 15-20 year history of almost daily recreational inhalation of methamphetamine. Mineralogical analysis confirmed the presence of talc on biopsy of the area of progressive massive fibrosis. The coexistence of interstitial pulmonary fibrosis and progressi...
